Technological Leadership Institute Names Dr. Tariq Samad Honeywell/W.R Sweatt Chair & Director of Graduate Studies | Technological Leadership Institute

Dr. Samad to lead Institute’s Master of Science in Management of Technology degree program

The University of Minnesota Technological Leadership Institute (TLI) is proud to announce Dr. Tariq Samad as the new director of graduate studies for the Master of Science in Management of Technology (MOT) degree program. In addition to his role as the director of graduate studies for TLI's flagship degree program, Dr. Samad will serve as a senior fellow and the Honeywell/W.R. Sweatt Chair in the Management of Technology. He will also teach in all three of TLI’s graduate degree programs, and participate in the development and delivery of customized short courses and professional development programs in response to industry needs.

 “Dr. Samad has repeatedly demonstrated his passion and commitment to all aspects of technology innovation and growth,” said Dr. Massoud Amin, director of the Technological Leadership Institute. “We are honored to have him continue his exemplary research and scholarly work with us at TLI, as well as colleagues at the College of Science & Engineering, across the University of Minnesota, and beyond with stakeholders and the wider innovation community.”

 Dr. Samad brings more than 30 years of professional experience, leadership and expertise to TLI. He spent his corporate career with Honeywell in the Twin Cities, and for the last 15 years, has been a corporate fellow in Honeywell Automation and Control Solutions, a $15 billion strategic business group of the corporation. His career has been focused on technology strategy and management, encompassing the end-to-end concept-to-commercialization pathway. He has also had substantial experience in research and innovation globally, and will work with TLI and the U of M to pursue research interests in areas such as clean energy, advanced manufacturing and smart cities.

 “My interactions with TLI and its staff over the last several years have left me impressed with its sense of purpose and its dynamism and appreciative of its crucial importance to the region and its industrial base,” said Samad. “By being part of TLI, I hope to help maintain its high standards of executive education, expand its research portfolio, grow its customer and stakeholder base, and further develop its outreach regionally, nationally and internationally.”

Dr. Samad is a Fellow of the IEEE and IFAC and the recipient of several awards including the 2008 IEEE CSS Control Systems Technology Award. He holds 20 patents and has authored or coauthored more than 100 publications. Dr. Samad received his B.S. in Engineering and Applied Science from Yale University and M.S. and Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University.
