Dr. Massoud Amin, director of the Technological Leadership Institute (TLI) at the University of Minnesota, is featured in a new historical book entitled “The Foundations of Electricity: 125 Years of Electricity.” The book is a joint effort between IEEE, the world’s largest technical professional organization focused on advancing technology, and the Indian Electrical and Electronics Manufacturers’ Association (IEEMA). The book, written by Robert A. Dent, focuses on global advancements and technological innovations in electricity from 1882 to 2010.
"I'm humbled and honored to be a part of this distinguished heritage of excellence in the 125-year timeline of innovations and technological advancements that power progress throughout the world," said Dr. Amin, who is globally recognized as the father of the smart grid. “I have seen diminished human conditions due to major blackouts and in villages without electricity. Electricity is the linchpin. This critical infrastructure constitutes the fundamental infrastructure of modern society. I look forward to our continued work and partnerships to help shape a more resilient, safer and secure future for our community, nation and the world.”
In January 1998, while at the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) in Palo Alto, Dr. Amin conceived and articulated the vision of “smart grid,” and led to the development of 24 technologies to enable modernized end-to-end electric power systems into an integrated, secure and smart self-healing grid. For the last two decades, he has continued his pioneering work as a researcher, teacher, scholar and leader on multiple fronts. As a result of his commitment to excellence and progress in research and development of smart grids and security of critical infrastructures, Dr. Massoud Amin has received many awards, including being elected an IEEE Fellow in 2016, and an ASME fellow in 2010. He also serves as the chairman of the IEEE Smart Grid, and serves on the boards of two regional organizations that oversee the security and reliability of North American mid-continent and Texas electricity grids.
“In the coming decades, the electric power and energy industry will be vastly different than it is today,” said IEEE Power and Energy Society President Damir Novosel. “As we contemplate what the grid of the future will look like and how it will meet the demands of society, it is imperative that we reflect upon the past 125 years of modern energy development and recognize that the initiatives we undertake today will affect the way we live in the future. This book helps us chart the course for the future as electricity will be the main source of energy for years to come.”
