Technological Leadership Institute Names Mike Johnson Honeywell/James J. Renier Chair & Director of Graduate Studies | Technological Leadership Institute
Johnson to lead Institute’s Master of Science in Security Technologies degree program

The University of Minnesota Technological Leadership Institute (TLI) is proud to announce Mike Johnson as the new director of graduate studies for the Master of Science in Security Technologies (MSST) degree program. In addition to directing the master’s degree program, Johnson will also lead the MSST minor, newly established Cyber Security minor, and serve as the Honeywell/James J. Renier Chair in Security Technologies.
“We are honored to have Mr. Johnson at the helm of our MSST degree program,” said Dr. Massoud Amin, director of the Technological Leadership Institute. “His decades of experience as a C-suite security leader will be an invaluable asset to our students, degree program and the Institute as a whole.”
Johnson brings more than 25 years of professional experience, certifications, skills and passion for security risk management to TLI. His previous positions include CISO and operations risk director at Bremer Bank, a $10B financial institution, the IT director and compliance officer for Dean Financial Services, and an FDIC bank examiner.
“There is tremendous need for properly trained security professionals, and I am excited to have the opportunity take the MSST degree program to new levels of quality and influence,” said Johnson. “I feel very fortunate to be in a position to share my passion for securing the world with the next generation of security leaders.”
Johnson has taught in the MSST degree program as a senior fellow since 2014 and is also a proud graduate of the MSST class of 2011. This mix of experience has given Johnson a unique understanding of the type of learning environment students need to understand and retain the complex security concepts learned in the program. As director of graduate studies, Johnson will develop, teach and administer graduate level courses in security technologies innovation, management and leadership. His chair responsibilities include participating in the development and delivery of customized short courses and professional development programs in response to industry needs.
Johnson received his B.A. from Concordia College Moorhead and has an M.S. in Security Technologies from the University of Minnesota Technological Leadership Institute.
