MOT vs MBA

What is right for you? When considering a graduate degree, it’s important to find a program that aligns with your long-term career goals. Often compared to an MBA, a Master’s Degree in Management of Technology (MOT) program goes beyond executive business education, combining critical business and technology skills with a focus on innovative thinking and leadership. There are a number of other distinctions that set the program apart.

  • Like an MBA, the MOT curriculum covers the fundamentals in accounting, finance and marketing, but it also includes crucial topics such as technology forecasting, innovation management, new technology product development, and commercialization.
  • Students gain a global perspective of the impact of technology and innovation firsthand by participating in a two-week international residency, drawing insights from two countries that represent an established and an emerging market.
  • Instead of a thesis, MOT students complete a capstone project that aims to provide a real-time solution or breakthrough within their own industry.

Discover a Graduate Program Designed for Technology Leaders

Making the leap from mid-career professional to executive leadership isn’t just a matter of waiting for the right opportunity to surface. Pursuing a master’s degree is a way for professionals to proactively carve out their own leadership path. But not all master’s programs offer the same level of training and education. Many aspiring to advance in their careers direct their focus to an MBA, but if you are looking to set yourself apart in a tech-intensive industry a Master’s Degree in Management of Technology (MOT) could provide the competitive advantage you’re looking for.

The Technological Leadership Institute (TLI) at the University of Minnesota has the oldest MOT program at a U.S. public university. The world-renowned program is taught by leading industry experts with years of executive leadership experience at some of the most respected U.S. and global organizations.

Executive Education for Working Professionals

Graduate school is a big decision and time commitment, particularly for those already immersed in their career. Those enrolled in TLI’s MOT program attend class one full day a week, alternating between Fridays and Saturdays to accommodate working professionals. The 21-month program is designed as a cohort model, creating a supportive, team environment enriched by the diverse experiences of classmates.

Getting started

Class sizes are limited to 30 and applications are accepted on a rolling basis, so don’t delay. To learn more about the program, faculty and enrollment requirements, contact an admissions representative by emailing MOT@umn.edu or signing up to attend an upcoming information session.
