Innovative Curriculum for Medical Device Leaders

The Medical Device Innovation curriculum follows a 34-credit degree program in technology innovation management, medical device innovation practica, medical technology macro environments, medical-technical subject specific electives and a capstone. Students meet two nights per week on Monday and Wednesday with a practicum course on occasional Fridays. The program is completed in just 14 months.

A detailed breakdown of the course curriculum by semester is laid out in the menus below:

Term 1 (Summer)

Summer: MDI 5002 Technology Foresight and Forecasting (3 credits)
Gain tools and techniques for technology forecasting, assessment, and foresight for decision-making in the medical device industry, with topics including technology dynamics, research and development, portfolio management, and resource allocation.

MDI 5004 Clinical Foundations of Medical Device Innovation (3 credits)
Become effective in clinical environments by gaining knowledge regarding surgical protocols; physician, surgeon, nursing, and technical support functions; medical terminology, anatomy and physiology; ethnology research; healthcare law; Medicare/Medicaid; and HIPPA requirements.

MDI 5010 Product Innovation and Development Management (3 credits)
Discover the framework for conceptualization, design, development, and the commercialization process for medical products, with a survey of key steps in innovation from an engineering and business perspective.

MDI 5050 Interpersonal Effectiveness and Team Dynamics (1 credit)
Develop confidence and capability to transition from technical experts to leaders of multi-disciplinary innovation teams and projects as you explore the mindset and skill set needed to effectively lead and manage yourself and project teams, build organizational capability to execute business priorities, and lead change initiatives.

Term 2 (Fall)

Fall: MDI 5001 Technical Writing Essentials (1 credit)
Develop the professional skills required to communicate technical information to a broad audience in an effective manner.

MDI 5012 Medical Industry Macro Environment (3 credits)
Dive into emerging trends, ethics, globalization, regulatory affairs, and other issues relevant to success in the medical industry macro environment.

MDI 5013 Medical Device Center Practicum I (2 credits)
Gain added focus on teaching innovation steps and processes using known clinical needs as examples in collaboration with the Medical Device Center.

MDI 5051 Leading Innovation and Change (1 credit)
Explore the role and differentiating capabilities of outstanding innovation leaders in complex and dynamic environments.  Practice improving team effectiveness and develop a change leadership plan to support implementation of current work or the Capstone Project.

Concentration Elective (3-6 credits)
Gain advanced knowledge through an elective course in biomedical engineering, computer science, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or the Medical Industry Leadership Institute (MILI). 

Term 3 (Spring)

MDI 5006 Finance, Valuation, and Entrepreneurship (3 credits)
Develop the entrepreneurial skills important in managing design, development, and commercialization of medical devices, with topics such as budgeting capital, projecting financial needs, and managing working capital.

MDI 5008 Quality, Regulatory, and Manufacturing Management (2 credits)
Examine process validations, Good Laboratory Practice (GLP), Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP), appropriate management of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and knowledge sharing across the value chain.

MDI 5014 Medical Device Center Practicum II (2 credits)
Apply the skills learned in the first practicum through a clinical immersion at the University of Minnesota's Academic Health Center, which is in collaboration with the Medical Device Center.

MDI 5020A Capstone Data Collection and Analysis (.5 credits)
Learn about design, management, and operation of infrastructure, connect concepts and methods as you prepare a proposal, conduct the project, and report the results in written and oral form.

Concentration Electives (3-6 credits)
Gain advanced knowledge through an elective course in biomedical engineering, computer science, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or the Medical Industry Leadership Institute (MILI).  

Term 4 (Summer)

MDI 5015 Medical Device Center Practicum III (2 credits)
Build on the skills and clinical experiences from the first practicums to develop a business model and turn innovation into a viable business proposition with exit strategies.

MDI 5020B Capstone Analysis and Report Preparation (1.5 credits)
Learn about design, management, and operation of infrastructure, connect concepts and methods as you prepare a proposal, conduct the project, and report the results in written and oral form.

Capstone

During the final semesters in the Medical Device Innovation degree program students tackle a relevant issue, problem, or subject within their current organization or community. Combining the knowledge and technical learning acquired in the MDI program students gain the motivation and skills to perform professionally in new ways.
